Mental health conditions are very common with more than half of Americans diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lifetime. Anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, and depression are some of the most common.

To contain the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) across the globe, many national and local governments implemented often drastic restrictions as preventive health measures. A few years later that changed dramatically, during my first clinical psychiatry rotation. A trio of patients stands out in my mind from my brief time working on an inpatient unit. The first was a cachectic woman with schizophrenia, her thoughts too disrupted by her mental illness for her to express even her most basic needs.

Regardless of how likely social media giants are to change their ways, though, individuals can take control of their own behavior. When there’s a filter applied to the digital world, it can be hard for teens to tell what’s real and what isn’t, which comes at a difficult time for them physically and emotionally. In the past, teens read magazines that contained altered photos of models. Apps that provide the user with airbrushing, teeth whitening, and more filters are easy to find and easier to use. Parents, in particular, often have to readjust their hopes or expectations for the future when their child develops a serious mental illness. In the process, you may grieve for the future you thought your child would have. Also keep in mind that mental health is not just about responding to problems.

Show respect for the things that bother your children, even as you help them learn how to keep things in perspective. Many of the hospitalized patients at Caraes Ndera Neuropsychiatric Hospital — the national referral hospital for mental illness — have been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Those in need are becoming increasingly connected to an expanding network of support and services. And every day, tangible steps are being taken to ensure that students across Ohio are healthy and thriving. In schools, educators are seeing increases in students who are getting connected and staying connected to resources. School climate surveys are also showing a rise in school connectedness. And some are already seeing decreases in behavior issues, minor infractions and even suspensions.

Relationships can be wonderful but challenging under the best of circumstances. When one partner has a serious mental illness, the situation can become even more complex. Many times, the partner without a diagnosed disorder will assume more responsibilities, at least for the short term.

Sleep deprivation studies show that otherwise healthy people can experience increased anxiety and distress levels following poor sleep. Those with mental health disorders are even more likely to experience chronic sleep problems and, in turn, these sleep problems are likely to exacerbate psychiatric symptoms and even increase risk for suicide. The good news is that there are ways to improve sleep quality and quantity, so identifying and addressing sleep problems is critical to alleviating the severity of psychiatric disorders. Frequently, because of their behavior, youth with mental health disorders pose challenges to parents and siblings and are sometimes singled out and blamed for family distress and disruption.

This can help to understand the prevalence of mental illnesses in the general population, including people never diagnosed by a healthcare professional. Childhood and adolescence are times of big changes, and it’s normal for all kids to experience emotional ups and downs. But at least 1 in 5 kids will have a diagnosable mental health problem that needs treatment. If your child develops a mental health problem, know it is not you or your child’s fault.

Even still, after the diagnosis it’s normal to feel a range of powerful—and often unpleasant—emotions. The mental health symptoms you might see in your child will, of course, be unique to them. But as a parent or caregiver, you have a good sense of what their “normal” looks like. Most health insurance plans cover mental health treatment in the same ways they cover medical or surgical treatments.
