We encourage students to enroll full-time to maximize their ability to immerse themselves in the academic and experiential learning experiences available while training. This degree is an academic program for graduates who seek to enter the ministry with skills in both theology and in counseling. Full-time on-campus students accepted into the dual degree program can complete the requirements for both Divinity and Master of Arts in Counseling degrees in four years instead of the usual five.

The CACREP accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling track in the Counselor Education MA program prepares students for licensure in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and to practice in agencies, private practices, and other settings. At the doctoral level, we offer a CACREP-accredited program in Counselor Education and Supervision. The Central Michigan University Counseling Program has been granted accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The program exceeds the requirements for all of its counseling programs (Addiction Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and School Counseling) leading to licensure/ endorsement and/ or counselor licensure in professional counseling. We also provide students with the awareness, knowledge, and skills for understanding dynamics of culture to work with administrative systems, small groups, and individuals to foster an environment that embraces different identities, experiences and backgrounds. Students will gain skills in both prevention and intervention to reach the vast number of students on a college campus. Historically our students do practicum in other colleges in the metropolitan area including Austin Community College, St. Edward’s University, Texas State University, and Huston-Tillotson University. Students must maintain a 3.0 to remain enrolled in the UTC Graduate School and the Counselor Education program. A grade of C or Unsatisfactory in a course will require that a student repeat the course. Students who earn two Cs will be dismissed from the UTC Graduate School and Counselor Education graduate program.

The Counselor Education curriculum in Educational Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin meets the educational requirements for licensure as an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) and for certification as a School Counselor in the State of Texas. Students and faculty work together in a learning community dedicated to advancing the field of counseling by adhering to the professional and ethical standards promoted by the American Counseling Association and American School Counselor Association.

At the master’s level, we offer CACREP-accredited programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and in School Counseling. We teach you to function as an advocate for students and to be an agent of individual and group-level change within school and community environments. You learn to develop, implement, and sustain programs for students that enable them to effectively participate in and contribute to our diverse society. Requirements for practicum hours range from 100 to 300 hours, with students interacting with supervisors throughout the practicum, which usually lasts a minimum of a full academic term or 10 weeks. Students work with clients under supervision, and they also attend meetings, participate in trainings, help with administrative and support tasks and more. You can complete online coursework to become a counselor, but you must complete fieldwork requirements in person.

Through coursework and fieldwork, you’ll gain the skills, knowledge, and academic credentials needed to begin the licensure process in Maryland and many other states. Aspiring mental health counselors are prepared to pursue licensure with NYU Steinhardt’s MPCAC-accredited online counseling master’s. To forge a successful career in counseling , and to receive state licensure or certification, you will first need to earn a master’s degree in counseling. Both the on-campus and online platforms require the completion of identical 60 credits curricular requirements. Graduates of the program usually are employed as professional counselors in diverse settings such as community mental health agencies, schools, substance abuse treatment programs, residential treatment programs, colleges, social services agencies, and pastoral settings.
